Census Research User Conference

Friday 27 September 2013
Birkbeck College, London

The first annual Census Research User Conference will be held at Birkbeck College, London, on 27 September from 9.30 – 5.30.

This one-day event will be an opportunity for data producers and research users of the census to gather and discuss data developments, research undertaken and work in progress. Presenters include the UK census offices and academic researchers.

Presentations will include:
 
· ONS Census Quality and Output plans
· ONS Census Analysis Work Programme
· Characteristics of and living arrangements amongst informal carers at the 2011 and 2001 censuses
· Using 2011 Census data to populate the Measurement Framework for equality and human rights
· Migration and population profiles of city-regions in England & Wales
· Assessing potential exposure and vulnerability to surface water flooding

Places are free but limited so booking is required. Tea and coffee will be provided in the morning and afternoon breaks, however lunch will not be provided.

IASSIST 2013: Call for papers

IASSIST is an international organization of professionals working in and with information technology and data services to support research and teaching in the social sciences.

The 2013 annual conference will be hosted by GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences at Maternushaus in Cologne, Germany from May 28-31.

The theme of this year’s conference is Data Innovation: Increasing Accessibility, Visibility and Sustainability

This theme reflects recent efforts across the globe by the largest government agencies down to the smaller independent research units to make data (be it survey, administrative, geospatial, or scientific) more open, accessible and understandable for all.

With an ever-increasing availability of new technologies offering unparalleled opportunities to sustainably deliver, share, model and visualize data, the program committee anticipates that there is much to share with and much to learn from one another. Interdisciplinarity is a large part of where innovation comes from, and we hope to receive submissions from those in the social sciences, humanities, sciences, and computer science fields.

The progam committee welcomes submissions on the theme outlined above, and encourages conference participants to propose papers and sessions that would be of interest to a diverse audience. In order to make session formation and scheduling more streamlined, we have created three distinct tracks. If you are not sure where your submission fits, or feel that it fits into more than one track, that’s perfectly fine. Please do still make your submission, and if accepted, we will find an appropriate fit.

The Royal Statistical Society's 2012 International Conference

Telford International Centre
3-6 September.

The conference organisers welcome submissions for contributed talks and posters are currently welcomed on any topic or area of interest related to statistics and the use of data.  The online submission system – together with information about the exact requirements - can be accessed via the conference website www.rss.org.uk/rss2012

The deadline for submissions is 30 March.

The broad streams for the conference have been announced as follows:

Submissions from statisticians and users of statistics in the early stages of their careers are positively encouraged.

The following plenary speakers have been confirmed for the conference: Hal Varian (Google), Martine Durand (OECD) and David Hand (Imperial College).

Confirmed invited sessions include:   Making the most of the 2011 Census outputs for England & Wales, Measuring National Well-Being, Ageing in the 21st Century, Inequality in the UK, Methodology for Longitudinal Studies and ‘Big Data’ Challenges.

ESDS International is holding this year's annual conference on Monday 28 November 2011 at the Institute of Materials in London.

The theme of the conference is Understanding the World: Evidence and Impact, and the event will be an opportunity for users and providers of international data to meet and share their ideas on issues relating to international data research.

This half day event will include a presentation by Gareth McGuinness from the International Monetary Fund on 'Understanding the world economy using Principal Global Indicators and other international data', Toby Green from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development will tell 'The story behind the OECD's Your Better Life Index' and we will also hear NatCen speaking about the 'European Social Survey'.

The programme also includes two 'Meet the Researcher' sessions:

• The poster presentation session is an opportunity for researchers using international data to introduce their work on topics such as 'Are Oil Revenue Funds effective in oil rich countries?', 'The curse of tourism?', 'Openness, Economic Growth, and Human Development: Evidence from South Asia' and 'Impact of Green Energy Policies on Electricity Market: An Econometric Analysis'.

• The second session includes talks on the following subjects - 'The Yield Curve as a Predictor of Economic Performance in Asia', 'The Effects of Economic Reforms on Manufacturing Dualism: Evidence from India', 'Electricity Co-operation and Decarbonisation: The Role of Import and Export in CO2 Reduction' and 'A Comparison of the EU-15 Countries Based on the Stiglitz Report’s Recommendations'

Call for Papers: Minimising and Handling Non-response in Sample Surveys

There is a large amount of research on the topic of non-response in sample surveys, from a design as well as from an analysis point of view. This seminar, organised by Jaak Billiet and Gert Molenberghs focuses on practical measures, classical as well as innovative, to address such non-response.

The seminar will host a maximum of 25 participants and we invite the submission of abstracts for presentations addressing the above topics. Abstracts (of no more than 250 words) must be submitted no later than 30 September, 2011.

There is no fee for attending the seminar and participants’ accommodation and subsistence expenses will be covered by the QMSS 2 programme, provided that they come from or are working in one of the 19 countries that support the QMSS 2 programme.

ESDS International Seventh Annual Conference 2011 - Understanding the world: evidence and impact

The theme of the 7th ESDS International Annual conference is 'Understanding the world: evidence and impact' and we are now looking for UK academics who have used ESDS International data to present their research. We would welcome submissions on the key issues and topics, set out in the Economic and Social Research Councils (ESRC's) strategic priorities (see

• Economic Performance and Sustainable Growth
• Influencing Behaviour and Informing Interventions
• Vibrant and Fair Society

Last years submissions included research on ‘Job insecurity and the local economic climate across Europe’, ‘World Electricity Cooperation' and ‘The Dynamic of Institutions and Economic Growth: The Asian Experience'.

Other speakers at the conference will include representatives from Inter Governmental Organisations such as the International Monetary Fund, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the International Energy Agency and other publishers of international data. There is no need to write a paper specifically for the conference but any papers submitted will be published on the ESDS International website as conference proceedings. Reasonable UK travel costs (i.e. standard class rail travel) for academic speakers will be reimbursed but we are unable to cover accommodation costs.

As a specialist data service of the ESRC/JISC funded Economic and Social Data Service, ESDS International provides the UK academic community with free access to the high quality socio-economic data sets produced by inter-governmental organisations such as the International Monetary Fund, the International Energy Agency, the United Nations and the World Bank. We also help users to locate and acquire international micro-level datasets, such as Eurobarometer, ISSP and the World Values Surveys.

First Understanding Sociey Conference Announced

The Institute for Socio Economic Research have announced the first Understanding Society/BHPS conference.

Date: Thursday June 30th- Friday July 1st
Venue: University of Essex

The conference will showcase early findings from Understanding Society, and other longitudinal studies such as the well-established British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), now part of Understanding Society.
