Warning - Scam census email

Statement from Director of the 2011 Census, Glen Watson, Friday 27 January 2012.

Email Scam

We are aware that an email entitled 'Population Census: a message to everyone - act now' is being circulated, allegedly in the name of National Statistician, Jil Matheson. This email demands individuals provide further personal information, supposedly for the Census and threatens fines for non-compliance.

This email is a scam and a hoax. It has no connection whatsoever with the National Statistician, the 2011 Census or the Office for National Statistics.

We believe the links in the email could download malware to any computer where the user clicks on the links. This could put your personal data, including financial information, at risk.

Anyone receiving this, or similar emails, should delete them, not open any links and certainly not provide any information.

For more information on how to protect yourself from this type of threat, please see www.getsafeonline.org

If you wish to, please report receipt of any such suspicious emails to www.actionfraud.org.uk

ONS takes the protection of personal census information extremely seriously. Collection of census data was completed last year and no further requests will be forthcoming from the Office for National Statistics relating to the 2011 Census.

Census 2011 Latest News

Over the past two years extensive consultations have taken place defining a range of 2011 Census products and services that will meet the needs of users; the most recent of which closed in April 2011. It was proposed in January 2011 that following this consultation a timetable for the release of outputs would be made available in May/June 2011. Whilst plans for Census outputs are progressing well, ONS need to ensure that any planned release timetable for the 2011 Census is both accurate and achievable. As a result a full release timetable will now be issued alongside a 2011 Census Prospectus in early 2012. In the meantime ONS will provide an agreed running order for 2011 Census outputs in July.

For further information on the release of information relating census outputs see :- http://www.ons.gov.uk/census/2011-census/produce-deliver-data/2011-census-outputs/index.html

Consultation on the 2011 Census SARs

This relates to the future of the Sample of Anonymised Records, the extract of the census that is released for research purposes.

The consultation on the 2011 SARs has now begun with feedback from experts on topic and variable content. The consultation will be opened up to general users on 18 October and you will be able to give your views at http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/sars/2011/consultations/
or by emailing sars-helpdesk@manchester.ac.uk.

If you use the SARS or think you may use them in the future, please contribute to this consultation. This is particularly important if you wish the data released from the 2011 census to be comparable with data you have used for previous years.
